Into the Spotlight We Will Go

BeautifulBallad went to the Miley Cyrus “Wonder World” concert last night, and it was amazing. Seriously, one of the best concerts we’ve been to. This summer we’ve seen Taylor Swift and the Jonas Brothers and, in our opinion, we think Miley blew both of them out of the water.
Below the jump will be our FULL review which may contain some spoilers, so don’t read if you still want to be surprised.
Miley didn’t just come out and sing her songs, she performed them. Every song had a different theme, we still can’t wrap our head around how little time she had to put together such a great show.
The show kicks off with Metro Station who did a decent job in getting the crowd warmed up. Trace made sure to remind the crowd that his little sister was on her way out so the audience better get ready. The band also thanked Miley many times, which we thought was sweet.
Fifteen minutes after Metro Station ended, Miley came blasting through- literally. Miley’s opener included her busting out of a HUGE ice block, which we thought was a nice metaphor for Miley breaking away from her Hannah Montana image. And this was NO Hannah Montana show, this was Miley through and through.
She performed three Hannah related songs, part of the “Hoedown Throwdown”, which was fittingly interrupted by Will.i.am. Miley also performed “Let’s Get Crazy” and a rocker version of “Spotlight”. These three songs were fun but they didn’t get the crowd on their feet the way “Party in the U.S.A.” and “See You Again” did. When these songs came on even the mothers in front of us hopped up and started grooving.
Miley was definitely aiming for an older audience but she wasn’t turning her back on her young fans. A lot of criticism we’ve heard has come from people judging her outfits and her dancing, when they haven’t seen the full show. Miley’s costumes (that’s what they are, she is a performer) were fitting and super cute. Plus, with how she was bouncing and running all over stage she needed clothes she could move in. Her dance moves were nothing different from what we’ve personally seen at our school dances, she was actually more tame than some of the people we’ve seen! Her dancing went along with every song and none of it was lewd or suggestive, the point was to have fun for herself and for the audience, which we thought she achieved.
One of our favorite aspects of the show was Miley’s back up dancers. They were fabulous. Seriously, Miley could have sat under the stage and sang and we would’ve enjoyed simply watching her dancers. And Miley certainly let her dancers shine many times, something we haven’t seen a lot of other stars do. However, you can bet when Miley wanted the spotlight back on her it wasn’t hard to command the audience’s attention. There is something about Miley where you want to watch her. And she genuinely seemed to be having a great time. With every new set change or new prop brought out (the car, the motorcycle) Miley glowed. It was as if she was thinking, “Look what I get to play with now!”.
We thought the prettiest number of the show was “Obsessed”, it was simple and her dancers told a story while she sang which was phenomenal. “Fly on the Wall” was also a very cool number. Miley was right when she said this was a show, a production. This is not your average run of the mill concert where you go to see someone stand there and sing. Miley performed her heart out.
Music wise she sounded good. There were a few spots where she was a little rough, but she compensated well. If there was a note Miley was afraid she couldn’t hit, simply because she was all over the stage, then she fixed herself to get the job done. But for 16, how she sounded was pretty darn good. We can’t imagine how great she’ll sound at 25, when she and her voice have matured fully.
Overall, we loved this show. Miley sounded great and kept us thoroughly entertained. We were surprised when the show came to an end. And at first when we heard she sang “Simple Song” before the encore began we were apprehensive. On her album it’s a nice song but not exactly a closer type, but let us assure you her performance of it was very fitting to how the show should end. We really loved that part of it. Miley’s encore was also killer.
This show is not a Hannah Montana show, as is evident by the opening act to Miley’s performance. We saw a lot of little girls in the audience, but a bunch of older fans, too. The little girls seemed to enjoy the show as much as the older girls, and from what we overheard the mothers enjoyed it as well.
If you’re looking to be entertained and have fun, Miley’s “Wonder World” tour is for you. And just a note, we’ve seen many different concerts (Jonas Brothers, Demi Lovato, Taylor Swift, Rascal Flatts, Kenny Chesney, GooGoo Dolls, All American Rejects, Fall Out Boy, and Gym Class Heroes to name a few). Miley, in our honest opinion, has been the best. The bar has been set everyone, now it’s time to see if you can match up.
